It's finally September, and the Angels have done precisely what fans expected after the deadline: fall behind in the standings and be run over for a postseason place. But this Angels season has felt different. The team has surpassed last year's win total and continues to rank 12th in home attendance, despite their average on-field performance. I agree that fans should boycott games to demonstrate to Arte that his management is causing a lack of support for the team. But it's difficult to not support the players, as this young core's potential continues to skyrocket. The game on July 31st that saw a barrage of fans dressed up in Angel costumes led by the “Halo Boyz” might be what this team and fanbase needs. The Dodgers' thronging of LA, Oracle Park's beauty, and the Padres' nearly nightly sellouts at Petco frequently eclipse us as a fan base.
The Right Field Revolution undoubtedly established this fanbase, garnering headlines not only for Angel fans but also for baseball as a whole. The sport of baseball is vividly, facing a decline amongst the younger generation compared to sports like basketball and football. However, fan movements like this allow fans to enjoy Angel baseball but also connect with fans like themselves who are stuck with the misery of having to support this team even in its darkest hours. These “cheap outfield seats” meant more than just a random game in July or September. It felt like an event where fans can come together to support this young team and connect. Angel fan pages as a whole, like us here at InsideHalos or pages like TaylorWardLover, Halo Talk, Halo Tees, and Angels Only, all make stellar content that relieves the frustration that comes with being a fan. Although many of us want to boycott games and avoid giving Arte Moreno revenue, it's important we show the young core that we as fans will always support them as they navigate their careers. For a franchise that has struggled to find consistent success since its 2002 World Series title, improving the fan experience has been crucial. The Right Field Revolution doesn’t change the standings, but it does keep the fanbase engaged. Even on tough nights, fans still leave the ballpark with memories worth sharing.
In my eyes, the Right Field Revolution and pages all over Instagram have given the Angels more than just a rebrand but breathed life into the stadium and the younger generation. Seeing HaloTees at almost every game, and accounts like TaylorWardLover getting attention from the team’s social media proves this fanbase is expanding. In a season, that saw the team miss the playoffs for the 11th straight year, the feeling felt asfans was definitely different then past seasons.
