Hey InsideHalos readers, my name is Cade and I’m excited to do another round of questions for Fanmail Friday. There are a lot of questions revolving around the trade deadline and injury updates. I’ll do the best I can to get you the information and opinion you want. I apologize if I did not get to your question.
Q: Fire sale? Who would you trade away? Your perfect trade deadline? (@cheguiii, @_._drew._._, @hxrrizont_26, @jacob1.d)
A: The trade deadline is still over a month away but where the Angels stand right they should definitely be sellers. They currently sit 16 games under .500 and are at-least seven games out of the division lead and a Wild Card spot. I think the easiest guys to move will be Brent Suter and Kirby Yates because contenders will always be looking for bullpen help and depth, both are on expiring contracts. The same goes for Jorge Soler and Adam Frazier -- both are injured right now but would provide something to a contending team. These four aren’t going to bring back anything special, but they will bring in some low tier prospects. Robert Stephenson and Yoan Moncada are also set to be free agents at the season's end but will highly likely not be moved considering both could be out for the remainder of the year. I think a Jo Adell and Reid Detmers trade makes a lot of sense and would bring back a good haul of quality prospects. Even with the Angels being a spot to sell, they could still buy in a way for a change of scenery guys like Oswald Peraza and Vaughn Grissom. They are gonna need to fill roster spots and they could take a chance on some players who could use a change of ball clubs.
Q: Does Neto get sent down to the minors or lineup? Change of scenery? Trade? (@spectremerki, @robjpk1990)
A: I do not think Neto will be sent down to the minors. O’Hoppe wasn’t even optioned and he was really struggling, but now seems to be doing a bit better. There have been some glaring problems in his game. His defense hasn’t been good and he doesn’t really seem to have a plan at the plate. That’s why his strikeout rate is through the roof. Even with the struggles he still has 15 home runs and 14 doubles, he just has to improve his all-around game. The Angels could get a lot back for Neto but I think a trade is unlikely. There has been some rumbling about the Boston Red Sox being interested but I’m not sure how serious that rumor is. I think teams will be calling but in the end I don’t think a trade comes together.
Q: Injury update on Kikuchi and Joyce (@juanca562, @ryanmaxson_8173)
A: Yusei Kikuchi has been on the 60-day injured list since May 22 with left shoulder inflammation. It is possible that he returns in late July. He is scheduled to begin a throwing program sometime this month. Ben Joyce hasn’t pitched all season and is currently on the 60-day injured list after undergoing right shoulder surgery. He is currently at the club's complex in Arizona rehabbing and throwing bullpens. A June return for Joyce is possible. (All information provided by the Los Angeles Angels)
Q: When is the right time to call up Christian Moore? Future role? (@richrza, @coolbrad124)
A: Christian Moore just got the call on June 18 to replace Mike Trout on the roster. It doesn't seem like Trout will be out very long based on early reports, so It will be a good chance to let Moore prove himself and show what he can do. His first game with the Angels this year was in left field so that could be an option moving forward. Second base, third base, and left field is where he has played so far in the minors and majors. Long term I think his future position will depend on how well Peraza does moving forward. He has been really good defensively at second and his bat has been solid. Left field has been a problem for the Angels this year and he could look to fix that problem himself.
Q: Detmers trade? What would a return look like? (@atamaitaidessu, @troyyyleee, @canelo_galan)
A: Trading Reid Detmers would be one of the better moves in recent years if it happens and they demand the right return. He has been really good this season returning to the rotation owning a 3.68 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. Detmers has only allowed one run in his last three starts going back to June 5 and totaling 20 innings. He is under control through the 2028 season and would be one of the best starters moved at the deadline if he is made available. Recent reports have shown that the Angels have received early interest in him. For a pitcher of his caliber and the amount of control he has left, a return for Detmers would likely include multiple top-10 prospects from an organization that may include a top 100 prospects in all of the MLB. Trading Detmers would give the Angels farm system a really nice boost.
Q: What do you think a Jo Adell trade package looks like? Should he be traded? (@nate_dogg_247, @coolbrad124)
A: I think a Jo Adell trade could happen this year but It might not be the best time.. The Angels do have Nelson Rada and Raudi Rodriguez down in the minors who might be ready at some point. His numbers are down a bit from last season even with his raised batting average. They could trade him now with him under control for next season as well, or wait until the offseason or next summer if his numbers climb a bit. There still is a lot of time before the deadline and it’ll be important to monitor his production at the plate and defensively. Trading Adell would bring some good prospects, but not as much or quality that Detmers would. Adell maybe could bring back an organizational top-10 along with another lower tier prospect or two. The trade market changes every year and it’s hard to predict what a trade will look like.
Q: Will the Angels lose 100 games this year? (@sultanes1992)
A: There is a good chance they will lose 100 games. As of completed games on June 18, the Angels sit 30-46 with 86 games remaining. They will have to go 33-53 (.384) moving forward to avoid 100 losses. They’ve been playing better than that pace but we will have to wait and see. I think it will depend on how the roster looks after the trade deadline and if the rotation can keep up its current production. The Angels are still the only team in MLB that have yet to lose 100 games in a season.
Q: What’s the best place to check-in on Angels prospects? (@shane.blackk)
A: There are a ton of different places to see how the Angels farm system is doing. As far as websites, MLB Pipeline has a top 30 prospects list for each team, along with stats and summaries for featured players. Baseball America has really good in-depth coverage but it requires a paid subscription. On the Angels you will be able to access a prospects page which will show you the minor league schedule for the day, along with box scores for each game. On X you can follow Jared Tims, Taylor Blake Ward, and Angels MiLB who all provide really good coverage on the Angels prospects and affiliates. If you are looking just for individual player stats or team rosters, MLB has a site for each minor league affiliate and you can see the stats for every player.
