As Spring Training winds down and the Angels make cut after cut, until their roster is in its final form, one of the biggest questions ahead of the new season resides in the rotation.
Grayson Rodriguez, a 26-year-old right-handed starter, was picked up in the trade that sent surging power bat Taylor Ward to the Baltimore Orioles. His tenure with the Birds was marked by injury and upside, two things Angels fans are all too familiar with.
Rodriguez missed all of the 2025 season with an injury and got off to a rocky start this spring, allowing 7 runs in his first eight innings. Not promising. Fortunately enough for Angels fans, he’s picked it up down the stretch.
On March 13th, Rodriguez blanked the Guardians for 4.2 innings, and his Spring ERA currently sits at 4.97 with a WHIP of 1.42.
These stats aren’t head-turning by any means, but the story has remained the same: when Rodriguez is good, he’s REALLY good.
The Angels will need Rodriguez to be the best version of himself for them to reach the level of competitiveness fans deserve. When he’s cutting down hitters at will, he’s doing so with elite extension, one of the better changeups in the game, and above-average fastball velocity, while inducing whiffs at a solid clip.
Pitching coach Mike Maddux and the rest of the team have been working with the young Rodriguez on his command, a common struggle for developing arms.
When Rodriguez finds it within himself to dominate the edges without nibbling, while leaning into his velocity and elite offspeed stuff, he’ll provide the Angels with exactly what they’ve been searching for: an ace.
The good news is, Rodriguez has plenty of team control for the Angels to tweak things as they see fit. When they finally get the angle just right, watch out for this dynamic arm to help launch the Halos back into postseason contention.
The bad news is that Rodriguez has a case of “dead arm,” as manager Kurt Suzuki referred to it, and will likely start the season in the IL.
The team control that he possesses means that this isn’t the end-all, be-all for his tenure, but it’s a rocky start that’s for sure.
The Angels will need a quick bounce-back from Rodriguez, or owner Arte Moreno and Co. may have found their newest failed acquisition.
