The 2026 MLB season is officially here. The team goes into the season with pretty low expectations to say the least. The offseason was very quiet, and nothing really changed aside from a managerial change. That being said, here are a few things Halo fans should look out for this season and some questions they should be asking themselves.
Is Kurt Suzuki the answer for this team?
The Angels certainly turned some heads when they decided to hire Kurt Suzuki as their manager this past offseason. Suzuki played 16 major league seasons with five different teams, one of them being the Angels. He was a one time All-Star and very respected catcher during his time in the majors. Suzuki retired after the 2022 season and joined the Angels front office as a special assistant to the GM. He beat out candidates such as Albert Pujols and Torri Hunter for the vacant managerial position, and many people questioned the hire, especially after it was reported that he signed a one-year deal. This puts him in a very rigorous situation due to the lack of time he has to make an actual impact. It’s something to keep an eye on, especially since he’s not the only one who could be gone after this season.
Is this Perry Minasian’s last year as GM?
Speaking of possibly being gone after this season, Perry Minasian is definitely trying to save his job. Minasian’s tenure as Angels GM has been confusing to say the least. Minasian got the job in 2020 after the firing of Billy Eppler and there hasn’t really been much improvement to say the least since his hiring. One can’t put all the blame on him though. One could only imagine what it’s like trying to run the team with Arte Moreno breathing right down your neck at all times. The moves that Perry has made haven’t really panned out. From the departure of Shohei Ohtani to the lack of extension talks with their young star Zach Neto, there hasn’t been much to be happy about. Barring a miraculous postseason run, this season looks like it will be Perry’s last with the team, as his contract expires at the conclusion of the season.
Can Mike Trout turn back the clock?
At the time this was written, Mike Trout has had a good start to his 2026 campaign. Trout has hit two home runs and drawn eleven walks, along with swiping two bags. There’s no denying that as long as Trout is on this team, it belongs to him and that’s no disrespect to Zach Neto, who could make the argument that he is the best player on this team given his youth and ability. Mike Trout is an Angels legend and a lock for the Hall of Fame, but injuries have cut his last handful of seasons short. If there is any chance of getting this squad to the playoffs, they have to hope that he can produce to some extent and stay on the field. Trout has much to give to this young squad and only through him can this team see real success.
Will Zach Neto get an extension?
As previously mentioned, there is no more questioning Zach Neto’s abilities. Neto has had two great seasons now and has solidified himself as a top ten shortstop in all of baseball, some may even say top five. Regardless of where you place him, it’s still confusing as to why he hasn’t gotten extended yet. Neto’s game is only going to grow from this point on and so will his value. The 25-year-old hasn’t spoken on the issue but has made it clear that he would like to stay in Anaheim long term. Let’s hope Arte Moreno does something productive and locks up the heir to the throne once Mike Trout is gone.
What does Logan O’Hoppe’s future with the team look like?
To some this question may be a bit of a strange one, but it’s looking more like one that fans must be asking themselves. Just a couple seasons ago, Logan O’Hoppe looked like a true building block and franchise catcher for the Angels. The flashes have been there, but inconsistency has been the main concern for him. At the time of writing this, he has already committed three errors and just further fuels the argument of him being one of the worst defensive catchers in the league. It’s understandable that he has yet to get a contract extension, but the real question should be if he switches positions (possibly first base) or does he get traded? Time will tell but time is the last thing that O’Hoppe has at this point in his career and where the team stands in terms of building a winning team.
