Remembering Garret Anderson

Angels Articles

The Angels family lost a great man, a great player and great teammate yesterday. Garret Anderson passed away, reportedly from a heart attack at the age of 53. Those words have hit like a brick. For many of us Anderson was a staple in our childhood lineups. A name sprinkled across the tops statistical category when it came to Angels hitters. Anderson was as good as they come and smoother than the rest. It looked effortless. Fans at times may have taken it for granted or not realized how impressive it was, what we were getting to watch day in and day out. A revered teammate. How do you quantify what he meant to the team when they hit big as a Wild Card, winning the 2002 World Series? Mike Scioscia once mentioned him as the foundation of that team. He was on the field everything Sosh was in the dugout. Anderson, himself said during his Angels Hall of Fame speech, “I was a good teammate, and being a good teammate goes a long way with a lot of people… So that was the biggest compliment for me, people saying I was a good teammate.” That is who GA was and will be remembered as. A good teammate, great man, and a calming presence who during a 7-year peak from 1997-2003 averaged more than 42 doubles 104 RBIs hitting just a hair below .300 during that stretch.

Hidden in Anaheim some of his accomplishments may have gone unnoticed. He mashed his way onto the scene in 1995 as a 23-year-old hiƫng .321 with an OBP of .352 and 16 home runs En route to a 3.0 bWAR in just 106 games for a 2nd place Rookie of the Year finish. In looking through his statistics, I think the most interesting and little fun fact was in 2000 and 2001, both productive years, he hit more homers than he had walks. In 2002 he went for 56 doubles, a 4th place MVP finish and a World Series clinching Game 7, 3-RBI double. While in 2002 he had his first of 3 All-Star appearances and World Series secured, it was in 2003 truly showcased his talent to the baseball world winning the Home Run Derby and All-Star game in the same year.

One of the easiest, no-doubt Angels Hall of Fame members let’s take a look at some of the categories he, as mentioned prior, leads the Angels all-time lists in. Garret amassed 2,013 games played as an Angel, with 2,368 hits in 7,989 at bats. He had 796 extra-base hits, 489 of them being doubles. He also has an individual game record for the Angels, when he ambushed the Yankees for 10-RBIs in a 2 homer and 2 double performance as the Angels won 18-9 on August 21, 2007.

The Angels put out the following statement: “The Angels Organization is mourning the loss of one of our franchise’s most beloved icons, Garret Anderson,” Angels owner Arte Moreno said in a statement. “Garret was a cornerstone of our organization throughout his 15 seasons and his stoic presence in the outfield and clubhouse elevated the Angels into an era of continued success, highlighted by the 2002 World Series Championship.” “Garret will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Angels fans for his professionalism, class, and loyalty throughout his career and beyond. His admiration and respect for the game was immeasurable. We extend our deepest condolences to Garret’s wife Teresa, daughters Brianne and Bailey, son Garret ‘Trey’ Anderson II, and his entire family”

As we scroll social media today, and look through each article giving background to the great player we will all see the similar trend. That as great as he was on the field, he was loved and revered as being even greater off the field. Garret was quoted at his time of retirement saying, “It was truly a privilege to play this wonderful game.” Well Garret, it was truly a privilege to watch you play this wonderful game. The Angels will begin wearing a patch in his honor tonight and through the rest of the 2026 season. For those attending, there will be a moment of silence and a video tribute ahead of their Friday night matchup against the Padres.

Inside Halos’ thoughts, love and prayers are with his family and friends during this time.
