The Angels’ Front Office: 2027 Scenarios

Angels Articles

October 5, 2026 - Written by Alex Sukyas

On September 1st, 2026, it was announced that Angels owner Arte Moreno would be selling a vast majority of his ownership stake to Stan Kroenke for a price tag of $4 billion. This sale will make Kroenke the controlling owner starting in early 2027.

Now, due to this change of ownership, Angels fans should expect plenty of changes in the front office. With that, let’s see what changes could potentially be made.

John Mozeliak and Molly Jolly’s Future Roles

The Angels currently have former Cardinals GM of 18 years John Mozeliak running the show as the Angels’ interim GM. Mozeliak was initially hired by current Angels President Molly Jolly and owner Arte Moreno to lead the search for a new permanent GM and make the best decisions for the team at the 2026 trade deadline and throughout the rest of the season.

With that, it came out in late July that Mozeliak would be expected to stay with the franchise under Moreno in 2027 and beyond. However, with Moreno selling the team, Mozeliak’s role with the Angels can now go one of two ways.

The first way is that Mozeliak stays with the franchise in a higher role, such as President of Baseball Operations or a senior advisor, which seems to remain a likely option despite the sale. This would then likely mean Mozeliak will continue searching for a GM to work under him, as he was originally hired to do.

The second way is that Mozeliak’s contract expires and Kroenke hires a new set of his own baseball executives to run the show. If this were to happen, that means any new hires will have influence from Kroenke himself.

As for Molly Jolly, who is the Angels’ current Team President after taking over for John Carpino when he retired, she is likely to see the same two paths. So far in her time as the Angels’ President, Jolly has been able to restore the team’s TV deal, as well as push for the firing of Perry Minasian in order to bring in John Mozeliak.

Overall, the most realistic scenario would be both Jolly and Mozeliak staying with the organization. In this scenario, it makes the most sense for Jolly to remain Team President and handle the financial aspect of the franchise, while Mozeliak becomes the President of Baseball Operations or a senior advisor and hires a GM to work under him.

New GM?

It is highly likely that the Angels hire a new permanent GM for the 2027 season. With this being known, who are some candidates? There are three major candidates to keep an eye on who could take the GM role in 2027.

The first candidate is Amiel Sawdaye, who has interviewed with the Angels in the past. Sawdaye is highly respected among baseball executives, as he spent 15 seasons with the Boston Red Sox before following current Arizona Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen to Arizona in 2016 to serve as an assistant GM under him.

While Sawdaye has interviewed with the Angels in the past, he has also interviewed with other Major League ballclubs such as the Rockies, Giants, and Nationals. Overall, he is a name to look out for when it comes to GM openings this offseason, especially that of the Angels.

The second candidate is Matt Forman, who is currently an assistant GM with the Guardians. Forman joined Cleveland as an intern in 2013 and has since climbed the ladder to become an assistant GM. He is currently viewed by baseball executives as a frontrunner to land a head job anywhere in baseball.

The third candidate is internal candidate Matt Swanson, who was promoted to Assistant GM when Mozeliak joined the franchise and has a long history with Mozeliak dating back to when both worked for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Swanson was initially hired by the Angels in 2016 as a scouting director before leaving in 2021. Now, he is back with the team as an assistant GM, as previously mentioned. Swanson can be seen as a leading candidate if Mozeliak remains with the franchise, as he will be familiar with the way Mozeliak runs a ballclub.

Overall, these three candidates can all be seen as major candidates for the Angels job due to their experience as baseball executives. However, it could still end up being anybody, and we likely won’t know officially until the offseason is in full swing.
