What State Will The Angels Be At The Trade Deadline?

The last month for the Los Angeles Angels has been a confusing one to say the least. Since May 1st, the Angels own a record of 18-17 with an exact 14-14 record in May itself. This whole year, the Angels have had their ups and downs in big ways. With starting out winning 9 of their first 14 games to losing 16 in a 21 game stretch from middle April to beginning of May. There are only a few things that you can highlight on this team as a guarantee as this team is deemed unpredictable. And while all baseball teams are, technically, unpredictable, this team has no consistency whatsoever.
There is no doubt that this Anaheim baseball team has very good players and a hard working staff. The Angels haven’t shown, this season, that they can’t win games consistently for two weeks. In the middle of May, the Angels pulled off an impressive 8 game win streak which included a 3 game sweep of the defending champion Dodgers in Los Angeles and a 4 game sweep of the Athletics in their new ballpark in Sacramento. And just when the team reached a .500 record, they immediately lost 5 games in a row. So while it’s no secret that this team can be good, it never seems to last.
So what should this team do with their talent when the Trade Deadline appears? It is really difficult to know what this team will do at any moment in time as the influences from owner Arte Moreno and Ron Washingtom are extremely difficult to read. But even though it is most likely that the Angels will sell at the deadline, it isn’t impossible to envision the Angels being buyers.
Back in July of 2023, back when the Angels had decided to maintain control of Shohei Ohtani and shut down any talks of him being traded at the end of July, The Angels were in a good spot and had a decent chance to contend for a playoff appearance. On July 26th, the Angels acquired RHP Lucas Giolito and RP Reynaldo Lopez from the Chicago White Sox. Both pitchers had great success prior to the trade as this transaction looked great for the Halos at the time. While this move led to a tremendous downfall in the Angels season and playoff hopes, this move acted as a symbol of hope for Angels fans as this proved that the Angels can and will make significant moves.
On the other side, the Angels haven’t shown any sign of consistent winning and will have to win a big chunk of games to stay over the hump to not sell. And the schedule that the Angels have leading up to the Deadline won’t be an easy boulder to move.
Teams currently over .500 that will be facing in June/July: Mariners, Yankees, Astros, Blue Jays, Phillies, Mets
But one question that needs to be asked is “Do the Angels need to sell or buy?”
The most prized possessions on this team are the young core (Logan O’Hoppe, Zach Neto, Nolan Schanuel, Ben Joyce, Jose Soriano) and the future Hall of Famer, Mike Trout. None of those guys are going to be on the market this year no matter how many offers they get. They are the money-makers for this organization and they are how this team is appealing to baseball fans. The only other players that are desired by other teams are 3B Yoan Moncada, LHP Tyler Anderson and OF Taylor Ward. These players are great at best and aren’t at the top of the trade market. Even if they were traded, it wouldn’t generate much of a difference if they were absent on this roster. But, if the team decided to get something out of their talent and trade these two, the haul wouldn’t be much of an intriguing return.
In the end, it doesn’t seem likely that this team will be very active in the trade market in 2025. Almost all of their amusement is untouchable and the few that are available wouldn’t be worth much. But much like Arte Moreno, this team is unpredictable. If this team was 5-8 games over .500 by the All Star Break, no one would be surprised and vice versa. And while it all depends on the record of this team and the consistency of their production, the likelihood that they buy or sell is pretty compact, but never count them out.
