Who Should the Angels Sign this Upcoming Offseason?

The Angels are in the hot seat as they enter the offseason with another year without a playoff appearance. Lots of great things to reflect on like Taylor Ward and Jo Adell each having 30+ home run seasons, sweeping the Dodgers on the road and at home, and even getting a glimpse of what this younger team could eventually be. Despite the positives, there are many holes that this team can improve on with a tight budget at around 30 million dollars. So lets get into who the Angels should be all over this offseason.

José Ureña

José last year finished with the Angels after four brief stints with other MLB clubs. He made his first appearance as a Halo in early September and instantly became someone in the Angels bullpen that could be reliable if one of our starters had a rough outing. He could be very effective in games where we need to stay in the game and could potentially make comebacks after being down by four or more runs. He has experience starting, and the Angels could use him as a middle reliever for a cheaper price. José Ureña finished the year with the Angels at a 3.79 ERA in 6 games allowing 8 earned runs in 17.2 innings. It doesn’t sound good, but if signed for the right amount, there could be no harm done if it doesn’t pan out.

Andrew Chafin

Andrew appeared in 16 games for the Halos posting a 1.98 ERA pitching 13.2 innings and only allowing 3 earned runs. With the Nationals he pitched 20 innings giving up only 6 earned runs posting a 2.70 ERA. Chafin brings passion to the field and after a great season he could sign for a cheaper price than most relievers. Although his age, 35, could be a problem down the line with possible injuries, it’s worth a shot trying to get a dominant reliever as the Angels are looking to have a powerhouse bullpen with Ben Joyce, Kenley Jansen, and potential signee, Andrew Chafin. Chafin also brings a fan favorite look as the shutdown old school pitcher with the long mustache and long curly hair that pops out of the hat. Fans would love to see that especially if he can repeat his continued success like he did last season.

Adam Frazier

This could be a long shot, but it’s definitely worth discussing signing Adam Frazier to a multi-year contract. Adam Frazier has consistently hit for an OBP at about .300 when healthy and brings a veteran presence to a young team in Anaheim. If Adam Frazier was still in the Pirates organization, this could’ve been a different conversation considering that he might want to finish his career in Pittsburgh. However, now that he has been sent over to KC to help the Royals in trying to make a playoff push, he hit .283 in 56 games posting an OBP of .320 and having a 1.1 WAR. This could mean that he might’ve just needed a change of scenery and hopefully the Angels front office saw that because this could be a very impactful signing.

Chris Taylor

Although this is yet another player who is on the older scale at 35, the Halos saw a lot of good moments in such a short period of time with him being hurt. Taylor showed up in a couple crucial moments for the Halos when trying to make a comeback. Chris does well under pressure, and he provides a very versatile and strong glove no matter his position. He also hasn’t really been an everyday starter for quite some time now due to the powerful offense of the LA Dodgers. If given the opportunity, it could be very rewarding. Chris Taylor would be a great sign for the Angels on the lower end of costs and could potentially be in the infield mix as the Halos are searching for a third baseman.

Dylan Cease, Zach Eflin, or Zac Gallen?

This topic is important to talk about and fan interaction is definitely wanted on this take. All these pitchers have had seasons now where their stuff has not been as sharp as we have seen before. This could be a one year type deal, some call it the prove it deal. At the end of the day, the Angels are most likely losing two starters in their rotation as Tyler Anderson and Kyle Hendricks are both entering free agency and getting older. If they want to be a competitive team, the pitching is the main concern for this offseason. Getting a decent starting pitcher along with more bullpen support should be the main focus this offseason. One of these pitchers would be a great addition if the Angels are looking to find a lower end pitcher that has potential of having a great season. Of course, Zach Eflin would be a great addition, but ideally Zac Gallen or Dylan Cease would be the main focus if we had a choice in signing any of these 3 pitchers. Eflin is dealing with a back injury which is why some people believe he had the season he did. However Eflin could still be a good sign if this organization is looking to get quality starters on the lower end.

Scott Barlow

Another relief pitcher the Halos should be all over is Scott Barlow. He proved this season that he could appear in nearly half the games that a full season has. He appeared in 75 games pitching 68.1 innings for the Reds and giving lots of rest and depth to the Reds bullpen which is huge if a team is going to be successful in the regular season. Scott Barlow could be a quality middle to 7th inning reliever for the Halos that could really help solve our bullpen. He also brings lots of energy that the Angels need to bring into a tight game that’s full of momentum.

The Angels haven’t made the postseason now for 11 seasons. Their last playoff win came in 2009. When fans of baseball are asked what the main reason is that the Angels continue to struggle, it always comes back to pitching. At the end of the day, if the Halos want to become a competitive team, they have to focus on pitching. Fans are hoping the Angels are smart and re-sign Kenley Jansen who already claimed he wants to come back, along with extending Neto as he’s become Anaheim’s beloved player. But the fact is that the Angels could be a very successful team if they focus on what’s important for the situation we’re in now, which is improving our starting rotation and bullpen.
