October brought an unexpected hire with Kurt Suzuki being named the Angels manager. When Angels fans heard it would only be a one-year deal, many set into panic thinking this was a ploy by Arte Moreno to avoid spending money on a manager during the lockout that is undoubtedly coming in 2027. Hiring a quality coaching staff while only being able to guarantee a 1-year contract seemed like an impossible feat. The Angels put those doubts to rest quickly after poaching Mike Maddux from the Rangers and naming him their new pitching coach.
Since then the Angels added 5 new coaches to join Mike Maddux on Kurt Suzuki’s staff including former Blue Jays manager, John Gibbons, former Angels Adam Eaton and Max Stassi, as well as some internal promotions with Salt Lake Bee’s manager, Keith Johnson and Rocket City Trash Panda’s manager, Andy Schatzley also joining the staff.
Bench Coach - John Gibbons
John Gibbons will join the Angels coaching staff after two separate managerial stints with the Toronto Blue Jays from 2004 to 2008 and between 2013 to 2018. Angels general manager, Perry Minasian, worked with John Gibbons during his second stint with Toronto. He led the Blue Jays to back to back American League Championship Series in 2015 and 2016. Gibbons was the bench coach over the past two seasons with the Mets under rookie manager, Carlos Mendoza. Now he will have the same task in Anaheim where he will mentor another rookie manager in Kurt Suzuki.
First Base Coach & Outfield Instructor - Adam Eaton
Former Angel, Adam Eaton will be joining the Angels coaching staff as the first base coach, he’ll be tasked with improving the Angels outfield defense as the Outfield Instructor. Eaton, most recently was the director of player development at Michigan State University, this will be his first coaching job in the pros. His last season at the big league level came in 2021 where he played with the Angels and new manager, Kurt Suzuki. He also played with Kurt, as well as Anthony Rendon, on the Nationals where they won the 2019 World Series.
Eaton was a great defensive outfielder, specifically in 2016 where he had 28 defensive runs saves and 18 outs above average in right field with the White Sox.
Per @JeffFletcherOCR of the OC Register, the #Angels have hired former Halo, Max Stassi as their catching coach who last played in the big leagues in 2022 with Kurt Suzuki on the Angels.

The Halos have also hired the Bees manager, Keith Johnson as their 3B coach & the Trash… pic.twitter.com/EsbfP2fj6u
Third Base Coach - Keith Johnson
The Angels promoted their AAA manager, Keith Johnson, to join Kurt Suzuki’s staff after 10 years of managing the Salt Lake Bees, he’ll be the Angels 3B coach. Johnson is the Bees winning-est manager after reaching his 900th win earlier this season. Johnson will have plenty of familiarity on the Angels roster as he managed plenty of the Angels players who spent time with the Bees. Suzuki spent time as an Assistant to the GM over the past three seasons, so he knows Johnson very well. Johnson has been seen as a potential big-league managerial candidate for quite some time and spent 3 seasons in Miami as the Marlins 1B coach.
Catching Coach - Max Stassi
Former Angel, Max Stassi will join the Angels coaching staff this season as the Catching Coach. He was the Angels starting catcher for 4 seasons, from 2019 to 2023. Stassi missed all of the 2023 season due to a hip injury and also a family emergency. Angels manager, Kurt Suzuki was Stassi’s backup catcher in 2021 and 2022. Logan O’Hoppe struggled mightily this past season and will now have two defensive minded catchers on the Angels coaching staff with Max Stassi joining Kurt Suzuki, they both, along with Travis d’Arnaud, will be invaluable to Logan O’Hoppe and his development.
Infield Coach - Andy Schatzley
The Angels also promoted their AA manager, Andy Schatzley, as their infield coach. Schatzley spent 4 seasons with the Rocket City Trash Pandas as the manager. Prior to that, he spent time at the college level in multiple different positions. Schatzley managed Zach Neto, Nolan Schanuel, Christian Moore, Denzer Guzman, Kyren Paris, Logan O’Hoppe, Bryce Teodosio and many others. He, like Johnson, will bring a ton of familiarity with the Angels young players after having helped with development in the Angels young core over the past half decade.
We are still currently waiting on some other hires, as the Angels will need a bullpen coach, and an assistant pitching and hitting coach. Of the most importance, the Halos will need to find a hitting coach which is believed to be announced as early as tomorrow. So far, it’s a great start to the Angels coaching staff.
