Just hours after Ken Rosenthal predicted the news would happen after the season, the Angels have relieved General Manager Perry Minasian of his duties. John Mozeliak is taking his position effective immediately.
This decision comes not long after news that the Angels would keep their key players ahead of the trade deadline. Young pitchers like Reid Detmers and José Soriano, along with outfielder Jo Adell, were among the names mentioned staying off the trade block. However, AngelsWin writer Ryan Falla claims that Owner Arte Moreno and Minasian “severely butt heads over Perry’s desire to trade” these players and others of their nature. While unverified, speculation has arisen that this is the reason for the firing. This move was weeks in the making, per Sam Blum, meaning arguments between the Owner and the GM over the trade deadline have likely been heating up, leading to Moreno’s final decision.
Perry is finished after a five-plus-year run with Anaheim, which included the worst season in franchise history (2024; 63-99), the lowest attendance since before the team's 2002 World Series win, and the tearing apart of the farm system in 2023 to attempt to clinch a long-shot playoff berth. Perry’s inability to build around Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani showed when the team acquired mid-level veteran pitchers whose stats immediately plummeted once they joined the already struggling club at each trade deadline. Not to mention, the team is on track to finish last place three seasons in a row for the first time, and finished in last twice in a row (2024-2025) for the first time since 1974 to 1975. Perry was overly involved in the draft, as some say. He famously drafted all pitchers in his first year with the Angels, 2021. Just three of those pitchers have debuted with the Angels: Sam Bachman (Round 1 (9); debuted 2023), Brett Kerry (Round 5 (141); debuted June 17), and Chase Silseth (Round 11 (321); debuted 2022). The fourth Major Leaguer, Ky Bush, did not debut with the Angels and was traded in 2023 during the Halo’s playoff push. The rest of these names are generally unheard of, besides Luke Murphy, who seems to have found his footing and is boasting a 0.33 ERA in 25 games, serving as AA Rocket City’s primary closer.
Team President Molly Jolly on Minasian’s time:
“Perry has been a valued leader who has worked tirelessly over the last six years to strengthen our baseball operations department. I am grateful for his dedication, insight, and many contributions to our organization.”
This statement couldn’t be more true. Perry has always shown his dedication to the team. Sadly, his ability to maintain a decent depth within the organization, especially pitching depth, has driven the farm system to the ground, ranking it 28th according to Baseball America. However, some aforementioned problems have spanned multiple front offices, as Owner Arte Moreno has constantly refused to rebuild the team, which Perry reportedly disliked. Perhaps Moreno was tired of the constant clash between the two and decided to fire him and bring in someone else who would agree with him. First, however, Jon Mozeliak will fill in for the rest of the season before that can happen.
John Mozeliak, who served as the General Manager for the St. Louis Cardinals from 2007-2025, is “refining a baseball operations strategy and assisting the organization in its search for a new general manager.” However, the Angels have not specified how long such searching will take. His official title is “baseball operations consultant.” As of right now, it doesn’t look like he’s under consideration for the full-time role while the organization conducts its search, although his name isn’t completely ruled out. During the hiring process, Mozeliak did not speak to Arte Moreno, but stated that “he does want to win.” One of the two is lying.
Point aside, Mike Trout had something to say about him:
“I had a chance to meet with him earlier for a brief time because he's been running around crazy today. But knowing he's coming from a winning organization with the Cardinals, I'm excited to sit down with him and talk to him.”
It seems that clubhouse leaders have a sense of optimism regarding Mozeliak, given his track record with the Cardinals. During his tenure as St. Louis’ General Manager from 2007-2025, the team managed ten postseason appearances, two pennants, and the 2011 World Series. The team also posted 15 straight winning seasons (2008-2022), the most in franchise history. During his time, the organization’s farm system was elite, which resulted in Baseball America awarding them with the Organization of the Year award in 2011 and 2013. He especially shone in his draft processes, as plenty of draftees became productive Major Leaguers, such as Michael Wacha, Tommy Edman, and Lars Nootbaar, to name a few. Mozeliak comes from years of success, and if that can be brought onto the Angels during his short time (with minimal intervention from Arte Moreno), it could prove to determine the next few seasons for the Angels and change the trajectory of the franchise for the next decade.
