Angels Trade Reliever Brent Suter to Braves, Acquire Nacho Alvarez Jr.

The Angels swung a minor trade this morning, sending left-handed reliever Brent Suter to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr., who made his MLB debut with Atlanta in 2024. Suter was signed by the Angels over the offseason to a one-year, $1.25 million contract.
Suter has been Kurt Suzuki’s most-used reliever out of the Angels bullpen, leading all relievers on the team with 63.1 innings pitched. He’s filled multiple roles throughout the season, including multi-inning appearances and three starts as an opener.
He’s put together a solid season, posting a 4.12 ERA and 1.26 WHIP, and should be a nice addition to a Braves bullpen that has been among the best in baseball. Suter relies on a four-pitch mix consisting of a sinker, changeup, four-seam fastball, and slider, allowing him to fill a variety of roles. While he doesn’t generate many swings and misses, he excels at limiting hard contact and inducing ground balls.
In return, the Angels acquired infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr., who debuted with the Braves in 2024 but has accumulated just 240 major league plate appearances since then. He has not appeared in the majors this season. Alvarez has logged innings at both second and third base and should provide the Angels with valuable infield depth.
Over 37 games with Atlanta’s Triple-A affiliate in 2026, Alvarez Jr. slashed .236/.337/.326 with nine extra-base hits and 21 RBIs. He has also spent significant time on the injured list this season with an undisclosed injury. Entering 2025, he ranked as the Braves' fifth-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline and was known for his power, arm strength, and defensive ability. He could become another Braves reclamation project for the Angels, similar to Vaughn Grissom.
