In this mock draft, I’ll be projecting who the Angels will draft in the first 5 rounds of the MLB Draft. The players I choose will be chosen through a combination of who I think we should draft, who I think we will draft, and who I would draft if I was the Angels General Manager.

Day 1 (7/13):

Round 1

Pick 2: Kade Anderson, LHP, LSU, (No. 2)

I don’t see a world in which Anderson slips past pick 2. If he doesn’t get taken by the Nationals, he is ours (or at least he should be). Kade Anderson has 4 great pitches and is coming off a really strong end to his season, throwing 2 amazing games in the College World Series, including a complete game shut-out in Game 1 of the Finals, winning himself the College World Series Most Outstanding Player award. While I am slightly concerned about a few of Anderson’s starts this season, I love how he continued to pitch well throughout the season and didn’t let it shake his confidence. If Anderson gets taken 1st overall, I think the Angels should pick OF/C Ike Irish, LHP Jamie Arnold, RHP Kyson Witherspoon, or SS/3B Ethan Holliday.

Round 2

Pick 47: Charles Davalan, OF, Arkansas, (No. 54)

Charles Davalan had a really strong year at Arkansas, hitting .346 with 14 home runs, 60 RBIs, a .994 OPS, and 10 stolen bases. He also had more walks than strikeouts. Davalan has played 2B, CF, and RF in the past but played most of his games in LF this season. Davalan could be a potential replacement for Taylor Ward, whose contract runs through 2026 (assuming he doesn’t get traded at the deadline this year). Davalan would also help to provide prospect depth for a team who only has 4 outfielders in their top 30 prospects.

Round 3

Pick 79: Michael Lombardi, RHP, Tulane, (No. 75)

Lombardi was primarily a relief pitcher during his 3 years at Tulane. He was extremely effective this year, having a 2.14 ERA in 6 starts and 17 appearances out of the bullpen. Michael Lombardi has a 3 pitch mix, highlighted by his changeup. While it’s possible that he becomes a starter, I could also see him getting some reps as a closer in the minor leagues.

Compensation Round

The Angels received this pick as a result of failing to sign Ryan Prager, who the Angels drafted 81st overall in the 2024 draft.

The Angels like to go under-slot in these early-mid range rounds, so I have them taking 3 under-slot college players, all ranked about 50-70 spots below the draft pick. This will allow the Angels to sign a player who fell into rounds 6-10 to an over-slot deal.

Pick 105: Ethan Hedges, 3B, Southern California, (No. 159)

Hedges is coming off his best year at USC, hitting .346 with 14 home runs, 58 RBIs, and a 1.081 OPS. I like Hedges over other 3B in this range because he has the tools to stay at 3B long term. While I do think that Murf Gray out of Fresno State is a better hitter with more power, he will almost definitely end up at 1B. I prefer Ethan Hedges over Gray for that reason.

Day 2 (7/14):

Round 4

Pick 109: Jacob Morrison, RHP, Coastal Carolina, (No. 173)

Jacob Morrison helped Coastal Carolina reach the College World Series Finals, pitching quite well against Oregon State. Unfortunately for Coastal Carolina, Morrison didn’t fare well against LSU, giving up 5 earned runs in 3.2 innings. However, this was Morrison’s worst start this season by far. On the year, Morrison had a 2.42 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) and had a 0.947 WHIP. I think he has some real potential, and it would be especially sweet if we sign him under-slot.

Round 5

Pick 140: Grayson Grinsell, LHP, Oregon, (No. 190)

Grayson Grinsell found pretty consistent success at Oregon, finishing off his college career with a 3.01 ERA in 16 starts and a WHIP of 1.014. Grinsell had a few rough starts, but was overall very good for Oregon and had some really spectacular starts.

This wraps up my 5 Round Angels Mock Draft. I definitely see the Angels signing a highly touted high schooler to an overslot deal somewhere in the rounds 6-10 range, just like they did with Trey Gregory-Alford last year. Enjoy the draft and let me know your thoughts!
