2nd Round Pick
With the 47th pick in the MLB draft- Angels select Chase Shores, a righty out of LSU. This is a rather confusion pick in my opinion, as the Angels did just take Tyler Bremner in the first round, and the pick would’ve been better used on a 3rd Baseman, such as Dean Curley, who ended up being drafted by the Cleveland Guardians, or Quentin Young, who was drafted by the Minnesota Twins.
Is Shores a good pick?
In my opinion, no. I don’t see much upside on him, if there's any at all. In his only full season at LSU which was the 2024-25 season, Shores had a 5.09 ERA in 63.2 IP, with 70 Ks. However, he did strike out 2 batters for every batter he walked, which is decent, but his 1.461 WHIP cancels it out. The only other bright spot I see is that he doesn’t give up many home runs, only allowing 3 in his 24-25 season. I do hope that he is better than what he was in college, and we as fans will see how he turns out.
3rd Round Pick
Johnny Slawinski, the Angels 3rd round pick, coming at 79th overall, is a promising prospect. He’s 18, left handed, committed to Texas A&M, and comes from a small town in Texas. His arsenal includes a fastball that goes 90-93 mph, with possibilities of touching 95. He also has an upper 70s slider with a mid 70s curveball. He also can flash a low 80s changeup with great fade. Although RHP Anthony Eyanson would’ve been the better pick in this situation, Slawinski is a respectable pick as well. He may also need extra slot money, but the Angels' earlier two picks will cover that just fine, as both those picks will likely sign for less than their slots. It is also worth mentioning he is the first player out of his highschool to be selected in teh MLB draft.
They also drafted Nate Snead in the compensatory part of the 3rd round at pick 105.
