Angels Ink Two Veteran Relievers

Angels News

The Angels made a much needed move for the bullpen, signing LHP Drew Pomeranz and RHP Jordan Romano. These signings definitely fill needs for the Angels, who ranked 25th for ERA in 2025, ending the year with a 4.89 team ERA. With this, the Angels bullpen ranked 3rd-worst in the MLB for ERA, ending the year with a 4.86 ERA.

Drew Pomeranz

Drew Pomeranz, who is entering his 13th season, will bring a veteran presence to the Angels bullpen. Pomeranz had a very strong 2025 season with the Cubs. He ended the year with a 2.17 ERA, 1.067 WHIP, and a stat that really impressed me, 3.80 SO/BB ratio, meaning he is striking out nearly 4 batters for every batter he walks. For reference, most Angels pitchers sat at around a 2 SO/BB ratio in 2025. On top of this, Pomeranz pitched 49.2 Innings across 57 appearances and earned himself a save. As for his career numbers, he’s had a really solid career. He has a 3.82 career ERA and a 1.330 career WHIP. He’s also played for various teams, the teams being: The Rockies, A’s, Padres (2 Stints), Red Sox, Giants, Brewers, and Cubs. Pomeranz also did have a stint in the Angels organization in 2024. Pomeranz was signed to a minor league deal prior to spring training but did not make the cut and was released at the end of spring training. Now, the Angels have signed him to a 1 year, $4M deal.

Jordan Romano

Jordan Romano is entering his 8th year in the MLB. He had a very disappointing 2025 with the Phillies, finishing with an 8.23 ERA and 1.453 WHIP in 49 appearances (42.2 IP). Before that, he spent 6 years with Toronto, where he was one of the most dominant relievers in 2022 and 2023, having a 2.11 ERA in 2022 and a 2.90 ERA in 2023. However, 2024 was rough for the righty as he was sidelined for the season with a right elbow issue after only 15 appearances. Before getting injured, Romano had a 6.59 in 2024. Overall, the Angels signed Romano to a small 1 year, $2M deal.

Writer’s Opinion

I like both of these moves. Pomeranz had a great 2025. I definitely see him keeping that momentum in 2026. Overall, he is a good cheap signing that will really help the bullpen. In Romano’s case, he is also a good cheap option, except he comes with a switch risk. We saw him have a disappointing statline in 2025, but we also know what he can do at his best. So the hope with him is that he returns to some form of his 2022 and 2023 seasons. Overall, landing both of these guys for $6M total is a huge win in my book and I believe it will help the bullpen significantly.
