Who is Manoah?
The Angels had just added an arm to potentially join the rotation. That arm is RHP Alek Manoah, who was a former All Star. Manoah has a career statline consisting of a 3.34 ERA, 414 career Ks and a 1.164 WHIP in 420 IP. (75 Starts) Whilst this career statline is impressive, Manoah has certainly had his ups and downs, with the downs being far more recent. Manoah had a stunning 2022 campaign, finishing with a 2.24 ERA and 180 Ks in 196.2 IP. (31 Starts) This season would earn him a 3rd-place finish in AL Cy Young Voting and an All Star Game appearance. In 2023, Manoah had a disappointing season, ending with 5.87 ERA and 79 Ks in just 19 Starts. Then, come 2024, he had a solid start, finding himself with a 3.70 ERA before having to get Tommy John Surgery after just 5 starts. Manoah would come back to the minor leagues, where he would most recently have a 2.97 ERA with Triple-A Buffalo in 7 Starts. Manoah would then go on to be claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Braves in Late September. Manoah’s stint with the Braves’ organization would be short lived, as he would be non-tendered in November, making him a free agent. Now, on December 2nd, the Angels would sign Manoah to a 1 Year, $1.95M contract.
Writer’s Opinion
I think this move is a solid one. Manoah is a Low Risk, High Reward arm, and signing him for $1.95M is completely reasonable in my eyes. Now, the hope is Manoah can return to some version of his 2022 self with the help of the Angels’ new pitching coach, Mike Maddux. Manoah may also not have a spot in the rotation guaranteed. The Angels still have plenty of options both internally and on the free agency market to fill in this last spot, so Manoah will still have to work for it and earn it. The Angels are still rumored to be in play for guys like Tyler Mahle (who I personally really like), Zac Gallen, and Tatsuya Imai who reportedly said he wants to “beat the Dodgers”. On top of these guys, Manoah will still have to beat guys already within the Angels organization, such as Jack Kochanowicz, Caden Dana, Mitch Farris, and Sam Aldegheri. Let's say Manoah doesn’t land a spot in the starting rotation, there’s still the option for Manoah to pitch out of the bullpen in 2026. Overall, I think this is a solid signing, seeing all the potential ways this could work out for Manoah.
