The Angels Sign Brent Suter: A Breakdown

The Los Angeles Angels continued to beef up the bullpen by inking soft-tossing lefty Brent Suter to a one-year deal for the 2026 season.

In 2025, the now 36-year-old threw 67.2 innings at a 4.52 ERA and a 101 ERA+, 1% better than league average. This might sound like a middling signing that nobody should be intrigued by, but allow me to show you why that’s not the case.

Suter is a unique pitcher, to say the least. His fastball averages 87.9mph. In a league that’s bred to chase velocity and strike three, Suter finds success by inducing consistent soft contact with deception and elite command. His average exit velocity ranked in the 99th percentile of baseball in 2025, and his hard-hit% wasn’t too far behind, sitting in the 96th percentile. Hitters just can’t seem to figure Suter out. Although he doesn’t light up any radar guns whatsoever, his extension, which ranks in the 99th percentile, allows all of his pitches to play up in velocity and become much more difficult to square up.

Another aspect of Suter’s game that shant go unnoticed is his ability to stay on the field throughout a long season. There are plenty of starters who have been given the label ‘innings eater’ and make a living on throwing 6 innings every start, regardless of how hard it can be at times to watch. Suter not only brings an ironman skill set but also pairs his persistence with quality. In the last five seasons, Suter has thrown at least 65 innings out of the bullpen. That is ELITE volume coming from a reliever and really takes a load off any team's starting staff.

Suter brings quality, stability, and a new look to manager Kurt Suzuki’s 2026 bullpen. His experience should provide an umbrella for all the newcomers in camp, and he’s widely regarded as a great clubhouse presence. Angels fans should be ecstatic about this signing.
