Halos RHP Sam Bachman will be making his major league return after nearly 2 years. Originally lading on the IL due to a shoulder injury, Bachman’s stay on the IL only extended multiple times due to setbacks with his shoulder and then thoracic outlet syndrome, which extended his Il stay to another stint on the IL15. All of those injuries eventually addd up to him sitting out for 2 straight years, in which he will join the team in Baltimore on June 13th.
Who is Sam Bachman?
Bachman was drafted out of Miami University (OH) in the 1st round of the 2021 draft. (9th Overall). At Miami, Bachman held a great 3.06 ERA in 31 games spread across 3 seasons. Bachman quickly found himself in Double-A after being drafted, spending only 5 games in High A. After spending 18 games in Double-A where he somewhat struggled, having a 4.86 ERA, Bachman was called up to the Majors, making his debut against the Marlins where he pitched 2 innings, struck out 4, and let up 1 run. Bachman would appear in 11 games before getting injured, accumulating a 3.18 ERA in 17IP.
What does this mean for the Angels?
The Angels will be getting a much needed bullpen arm, as the bullpen has a combined 5.54 ERA. The Halos could use all the bullpen help they can get. Bachman, who hasn’t really shown all he can do yet, hence his injuries, has potential to be a solid arm that could eat up innings, as he shown he can in college, where he was a starting pitcher. This longevity will hopefully relieve pressure off of Closer Kenley Jansen, who has been put in situations where he needed to pitch in back to back games multiple times this season. However, despite Bachman’s respectable ERA back in 2023, he had a concerning 1.647 WHIP, meaning that he may be put at risk of allowing runs when there are runners on base, limiting his potential opportunities to do well. Anyways, Bachman is going to be joining the team on a 7-day road trip, along with newly called up INF Christian Moore.
