Unwanted Stability at the Top

Per Sam Blum, of The Athletic, after breaking the news that both Ron Washington and Ray Montgomery would be relieved of their duties, he followed it up reporting, however not confirmed, the expectation is that Perry Minasian will continue to head the front office for the last year of his contract. A Perry led team has a combined record of 358-452. A measly .441 winning percentage along with 4 managers for various amounts of time often doesn’t lead to more chances but it appears as of now it will for Perry. Many fans seem to be ready for the change, which makes what little stability this organization has provided unwanted. The few constants that are this teams makeup have been Arte Moreno, John Carpino, sustained losing and for the last half decade, Perry Minasian.
Going into the offseason he along with Arte, primarily Arte, will decide on a new manager and along with minimal money try to piece together a more competitive team. The best team fielded under Perry Minasian, may just be the one he had the least to do with as in his first season of his tenure the team went 77-85. A young core entering what should be a window of chance will need reinforcements in CF, 3B, at least 2 starters and some bullpen help. Tough to do with limited money, but Perry in his final year of chances may press the panic button and open the cupboards and empty what little prospect pool is there for cost effective options.
With a potential lockout looming in 2027, the Angels perhaps take a year similar to last. Instead of trading from the prospects to improve the major league roster, they could opt to sign veterans around those spots on one-year deals and enter the next offseason with plenty of payroll, a general manager spot open to go with what a farm we hope continues to improve and a promising core.
Let us hope he has a little late contract magic and can hit on upcoming moves to field a team built to last. Improved depth will be key for a team that has fielded minor league signings making up much of their lineup the last two September’s. He will have to be prudent and sure of his moves and work quickly. This team needs to aim for some upside in addition to what last year was a “raise the floor” type of offseason. One of the few items he hopefully can easily fill is the closer position in which Jansen has already said he’d love to return. In addition to that lets hope the Angels can return to a capable team. One that can play meaningful games and try to once again be even a .500 club. All eyes will be on Minasian in his contract year.
