With the Angels in the process of finding the franchise’s next manager, there are many rumors circulating that both parties have mutual interest and that they are close to making it official. With that being the case, what does the possible hiring of the baseball legend mean for the club?
Albert Pujols is obviously well known to not just Angel fans but baseball fans in general. The future first ballot Hall-of-Famer played 22 seasons in the MLB with a good chunk of those seasons being with the Cardinals and the Angels. Most people will probably remember him in St. Louis as that is where he won two championships and three MVP awards. Pujols sits fourth all time in career home runs with 703. His days in an Angel uniform weren’t as memorable as his days with the Cardinals but he’s still someone Angels fans respect. Only a few years removed from retiring as a player, Pujols is already on track to land his first MLB managerial job. He’s already been a manager in the Dominican Republic with Leones del Escogido, leading them to a Caribbean Series title.
It is reported that if the team and Pujols can agree on a contract, they would give him the opportunity to bring in his own coaching staff. If this is the case, there’s a high possibility that another Cardinal legend could be on the coaching staff, that person being Yadier Molina. This would be huge in terms of the development of Logan O’Hoppe as he would be learning from one of the best catchers of the last 20 years. Of course, hiring Pujols would also be a huge risk though with this being his first MLB job. His success in the Dominican Republic gives him some leverage as well as the experience he brings to the table. With the youth that this team has, learning from one of the most feared hitters of all time is something that they would all very much enjoy. It also helps that he is still only a few years removed from retiring and he has a sense of how the game is starting to be played. It’s also very exciting to see who else could be joining his staff if he is hired.
As of now all of this is just speculation, but it is exciting to see the franchise take the direction that it looks like they are taking. Obviously the front office needs to put in their part, that being acquiring players that will make an impact on this team with their play and their experience.
